| How to Use Sea
Pearls...
It's
Easy!
An
important part of empowering ourselves as women includes regaining
confidence in our bodies. We must re-learn how to listen to and
trust the natural signals our bodies give us. Using sea sponges
gives women the opportunity to experience what their bodies feel like --
both inside and out. They also give us a chance to get into the
rhythm of our special and individual moon cycle.
Sea sponges, like tampons, are not
sterile. Therefore, great personal care should be exercised in
their use.
First, wash your hands thoroughly.
Wet your sponge. Then thoroughly squeeze out excess water.
Insert the sponge into your vagina using your fingers. You should
feel comfortable. If you feel any pressure, remove your sponge and
trim around the sponge to a smaller size. However, your sponge is
pre-shaped, so don't cut it in half.
Sponges are soft and textured like
your vaginal wall and very easy to remove. Simply feel for the perimeter
of the sponge, grasp it and pull gently. For easy retrieval, you
may sew a piece of dental floss to the sponge. However, the sponge
is delicate, so take care when removing with the string.
As you become familiar with your
menstrual flow, you will learn how frequently you need to rinse your
sponge. Rinse your sponge well with water and squeeze out
thoroughly.
Re-Use!
Do not use soap on your sponge.
Soap leaves a film that upsets the natural pH balance of your vagina.
Air-drying in between uses is sufficient, similar to caring for your
toothbrush. Sun drying is preferable. At the end of your
cycle, soak your sponge in a vinegar-water or a baking soda-water
solution. A drop of tea tree oil or St. John's Wort oil or
tincture in water will also disinfect your sponge. Research shows
that a 0.5% strength of these herbs kills 60 strains of antibiotic
resistant staphlococcus aureus. When your sponge is dry, store it
in a cool dry place.
Keep in mind that your sponges may
last up to 1 year, but should probably be replaced every 6 months or so.
Remember to always keep an extra sponge on hand during your cycle in
case rinsing is not convenient!
