DAV University Scholarships Available for Veterans
Veterans enrolled full-time in an accredited institution of higher education can apply for a scholarship offered by the Minot Disabled American Veterans Chapter No. 4. The deadline to apply for a scholarship is August 14.
DAV Chapter 4 Senior Commander and Scholarship Coordinator Ron Garcia said the scholarship amount has been increased from $500 per semester to $1,000 per semester for a total of $2,000.
He said that two scholarships will be awarded this year.
“We did well in our draw, which allowed us to give more to the community,” Garcia said. The raffle was held this year.
Those eligible for scholarships must be veterans and must be enrolled full-time in a certified program, including Minot State University and other colleges in North Dakota.
The DAV Chapter initiated the scholarship program for three years. The Bob Fix Memorial Scholarship was named in honor of the former Commander of DAV Chapter #4 who passed away approximately two years ago.
“We in the chapter have decided to commemorate him with the scholarship,” Garcia said.
“We felt there was an issue we wanted to address and that was veterans education. Everything we do is always identified in one way or another with veterans,” Garcia said.
He said the DAV chapter supports the On The Water program, veterans in Mandan and Fargo retirement homes and veterans’ cemeteries.
“These are just some of the things we support,” Garcia said.
Scholarship applications are available at the Veterans Services Office, Minot State University Veterans Services Office, Minot Veterinary Center, and Kelly Weiand, Military Outreach Specialist at the Reserve Center armed forces. For more information, call Garcia at 240-1713.
