Teofimo Lopez Jr. is the unified lightweight champion. His father introduced him to boxing very early on and began to train him. After a successful amateur career, Lopez sought to represent the United States at the Olympics. Despite his victory at the US Olympic Trials, Lopez was unable to represent the United States as Carlos Balderas has already secured the only entry for the lightweight spot on the team.

After a crushing end to his dreams, Lopez was then able to qualify for the Honduran team and represent Honduras at the Rio 2016 Olympics. Lopez lost to future silver medalist Sofiane Oumiha.

Lopez is not a Mexican. Although he is Latino, both of his parents are from Honduras. ‘The Takeover’, meanwhile, was born and raised in the United States. He’s a tough New Yorker and has American citizenship to his name. It was only when they didn’t give him his ticket to the Olympics, despite winning the Olympic Trials, that Lopez decided to represent Honduras.
